Reputation System

How Cargo reputation is calculated and used

Reputation System

Cargo reputation reflects real-world performance. It helps users identify reliable Cargos and rewards publishers who maintain quality.

How Reputation Works

Every Cargo starts with a reputation score of 1.0 (on a 0.0-5.0 scale). The score changes based on job outcomes and user feedback.

Reputation Components

FactorWeightDescription
Job Success Rate60%Percentage of jobs completing successfully
Reliability25%Consistency over time (low variance)
User Feedback15%Ratings and complaint frequency

Score Changes

Positive Events

EventScore Change
Job completes successfully+0.01
Job completes under expected time+0.005
Positive user rating+0.05
Streak bonus (100 successes)+0.10

Negative Events

EventScore Change
Job fails (error)-0.10
Job times out-0.05
Job cancelled by user-0.02
User complaint-0.20
Critical incident-0.50
Weighted by Recency
Recent events have more impact than older ones. A Cargo can recover from past issues by maintaining good performance.

Reading Reputation

Score Ranges

ScoreIndicatorMeaning
4.0 - 5.0ExcellentTop-tier reliability
3.0 - 3.9GoodSolid track record
2.0 - 2.9FairSome issues, use with awareness
1.0 - 1.9PoorSignificant problems
0.0 - 0.9CriticalMay be suspended

What to Look For

When evaluating a Cargo, check:

  1. Reputation score - Higher is better
  2. Job count - More jobs = more data
  3. Success rate - Percentage shown directly
  4. Trend - Is it improving or declining?
New Cargos
New Cargos start at 1.0 with few jobs. A low job count means the score may not be representative yet. Look for Cargos with 100+ jobs for reliable metrics.

Automatic Actions

The system takes automatic actions based on reputation:

Warnings

TriggerAction
Score drops below 1.5Warning email to publisher
Success rate below 90%Dashboard warning
3+ complaints in 24 hoursReview flag

Demotions

TriggerAction
Score drops below 1.0Trust level reduced by 1
Success rate below 80%Trust level reduced to 0
10+ complaints in 7 daysManual review triggered

Suspension

TriggerAction
Score drops below 0.5Cargo suspended
Success rate below 50%Cargo suspended
20+ complaints in 7 daysCargo suspended
Suspension
Suspended Cargos cannot accept new jobs. Publishers must fix issues and request reactivation.

Recovery

Demoted or suspended Cargos can recover:

From Demotion

  1. Fix underlying issues (bugs, performance)
  2. Update Cargo with new version
  3. Build positive track record
  4. Trust level restores automatically at thresholds

From Suspension

  1. Contact support to understand the issue
  2. Submit remediation plan
  3. Platform reviews and may reactivate
  4. Cargo starts at Trust Level 0
  5. Must earn back higher levels

For Publishers

Monitoring Reputation

Track your Cargo’s health:

  1. Go to My Cargos → Select Cargo
  2. Click Analytics tab
  3. View:
    • Current reputation score
    • Score history graph
    • Success/failure breakdown
    • Recent events

Maintaining Good Reputation

  1. Test thoroughly before publishing
  2. Monitor actively for failures
  3. Respond quickly to issues
  4. Update regularly to fix bugs
  5. Set realistic expectations in descriptions

Responding to Failures

When jobs fail:

  1. Check error logs in your dashboard
  2. Identify the root cause
  3. Fix and publish an update
  4. Failed jobs before the fix still count, but new successes will improve the score
Version Strategy
Use semantic versioning. Bug fixes in patch versions (1.0.1) show you're actively maintaining the Cargo.

For Users

Using Reputation to Choose

For critical applications:

  • Prefer score 3.0+ with 1000+ jobs
  • Check success rate is 95%+
  • Verify trust level is 2 (Verified)

For experimentation:

  • Score 2.0+ is usually fine
  • 100+ jobs gives reasonable confidence
  • Trust level 1 (Community) is acceptable

Reporting Issues

If a Cargo doesn’t work as expected:

  1. Click Report Issue on the Cargo page
  2. Describe what happened
  3. Include job ID if available
  4. Submit

Reports are reviewed by our team and may affect the Cargo’s reputation.

Fair Reporting
Please report genuine issues, not disagreements with expected behavior. False reports may affect your own account standing.

Reputation vs Trust Level

These are related but different:

AspectTrust LevelReputation

Who determines itPlatform (scans, reviews)Community (job outcomes)
How it changesExplicit promotion/demotionContinuous calculation
Primary purposeSecurityQuality

A Cargo can have high trust (Level 2, signed) but poor reputation (buggy, unreliable). Conversely, a Level 1 Cargo might have excellent reputation through consistent performance.

Best Cargos have both: high trust level AND high reputation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly does reputation change?

Score updates after every job. Major changes (demotion, suspension) are checked every 15 minutes.

Can I reset my Cargo’s reputation?

No, reputation carries forward. However, you can publish a new version of your Cargo (same ID, new container tag). The reputation continues but recent good performance will improve the score.

Do all job types count equally?

Yes, every job counts the same regardless of complexity or duration.

Is reputation public?

Yes, reputation score, job count, and success rate are visible to all users on the Cargo page.

Can I appeal a demotion or suspension?

Yes, contact support@archipelag.io with your Cargo ID and explanation.
